What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders. Complex and frequently underdiagnosed, EDS is often considered a medical "zebra"—a rare or unexpected condition that clinicians easily overlook. Just as no two zebras have the exact same stripes, no two individuals with EDS experience identical symptoms or presentation.

What Are the Common Symptoms?

  • Musculoskeletal: Joint hypermobility (overly flexible joints), frequent subluxations or dislocations, joint clicking and popping, and chronic muscle and joint pain.

  • Dermatologic: Hyperextensible (stretchy) skin, fragile tissue that bruises or tears easily, and increased susceptibility to hernias or pelvic floor dysfunction.

  • Gastrointestinal & Immunologic: Digestive issues such as dysmotility, heartburn, constipation, or IBS, as well as commonly associated comorbidities like Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), histamine intolerance, and food allergies or sensitivities.

Whether you have been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or hypermobility spectrum disorder, or are actively seeking answers, a possible diagnosis, and support, Jenny Lake Functional Wellness is here for you.
